When we are responsible for others, we do the following:


  1. manipulate
  2. try to fix
  3. cover for and try to protect
  4. rescue and care-take
  5. take control
  6. demand
  7. bully
  8. carry their feelings
  9. don’t listen


When we are responsible to others, we do these things:


  1. take care of our own business
  2. 11.          trust them to take care of their business
  3. show empathy & understanding
  4. encourage & empower
  5. share our experience
  6. level and be honest
  7. listen



When we are responsible for others, we feel:


  1. resentful
  2. exhausted
  3. overwhelmed
  4. anxious & fearful
  5. “liable for”
  6. guilt
  7. obligation
  8. judgmental
  9. pity



Notice your feelings at any given point during the day:

~~ If you are feeling any of the negative feelings listed above, ask yourself who you are taking responsibility for?

~~What can you do to move towards responsibility for self and responsibility to them instead of for them?


When we are responsible to others, we feel:


  1. at peace
  2. congruent (inside matches outer appearance)
  3. relaxed & grounded
  4. in touch with reality
  5. gratitude
  6. appreciation
  7. acceptance
  8. connection
  9. FREE

  1. Hmmm.. interesting concept. I definitely need to learn to keep my emotions in check sometimes, especially when I’m feeling overwhelmed at tasks I have to complete and it feels like there isn’t enough time in the day! I can feel like I’m responsible “for” things and get frustrated instead of responsible “to” things. Thanks for helping me realize that. 🙂
